The purple form of the mineral Quartz, Amethyst gets its colour from the presence of iron within the Quartz. It gets its name from the Greek word 'amethystos' meaning 'not drunk' - Amethyst was believed to protect against intoxication. February's birthstone and one of the best-known gemstones, some believe Amethyst to be a protective, calming, soothing crystal.
