Kunzite was not formally identified as a gemstone until 1902, when Tiffany's minerologist George Frederick Kunz recognised it as a new variety of the mineral spodumene. Some believe Kunzite to have powerful properties in crystal healing, and it is popularly used as a soothing, calming stone.
